Identify the two water roles
Make-down water hydrates the powder before dosing. Process water forms part of the suspension at the treatment stage. They may come from different sources and can vary independently. Label both when collecting samples for technical review.
Record available information such as source, temperature, pH and conductivity, along with hardness or other chemistry when relevant and measured. Conductivity alone does not identify every constituent. Avoid declaring two sources equivalent from appearance alone.
Run a paired preparation comparison
Prepare the same product code with two identified water sources under otherwise matched conditions. Keep powder mass, working volume, mixing and elapsed time consistent. Use the proposed-grade preparation instructions and document any necessary deviation.
Observe dispersion, undissolved material and stock consistency. Where viscosity is measured, use the same defined method. Do not let a preparation difference become hidden behind a change in concentration or measurement conditions.
Test both stocks on the same feed
Compare treatment response using representative material from the same sampling event and an explicit dose basis. Keep mixing and observation times matched. This helps distinguish a stock-water question from a simultaneous change in the suspension.
If both preparations perform poorly, reconsider feed representativeness and grade selection. If their response differs, repeat the controlled comparison and discuss the water data with technical sales before changing plant supply.
Assess the operational change
A source that works in a small comparison must still be available consistently at the required rate. Consider how water interruptions, seasonal variation or storage affect preparation. Confirm process and safety requirements with the responsible plant team.
Keep the chosen water condition in the trial and approval record. If repeated lumps appear, use the powder-dispersion investigation alongside water checks rather than assuming chemistry is the only cause.
