NPAM / TECHNICAL NOTE

Nonionic vs Anionic Polyacrylamide: Which Grade Should You Buy?

Buy the candidate that meets the process requirement, not the ionic label that sounds more specialized.

Define why both families are being considered

Nonionic and anionic describe different ionic selection routes, not interchangeable grades or a universal quality ranking. Ask what feed evidence justifies comparing them. Low pH, mineral origin or a competitor code alone is not enough to predict the winner.

Manufacturer guidance from SNF on polymer characteristics describes multiple ionic and molecular forms. That supports screening relevant candidates, not claiming that every nonionic product outperforms every anionic product.

Prepare fairly, not identically by habit

Use the instructions appropriate to each proposed code and record any differences in water, concentration or maturation. A common stock concentration is not a fair comparison if one material is incompletely prepared at that setting.

Once usable stock is available, compare against the same representative suspension and the same defined endpoint. Keep dose units explicit. The preparation-water check helps isolate a water effect from a polymer-family difference.

Compare the operating range

Observe more than one dose point and retain the required liquid and solids outcomes. A narrow successful point may not tolerate normal feed variation. Check transfer and the installed separator before approving a family switch.

Do not change upstream coagulant dose and polymer family simultaneously without a designed comparison. Otherwise the apparent advantage may belong to another process change rather than the selected polymer.

Treat the switch as a qualified purchase

Document the winning code, evidence and preparation requirement. Compare delivered treatment cost only for acceptable runs, then check equipment compatibility and supply terms. A lower price per bag does not establish the better commercial choice.

Use replacement qualification when moving away from an incumbent product. Keep a fallback and bounded first-order quantity until the plant evidence supports repeated supply.
