NPAM / TECHNICAL NOTE

Nonionic Polyacrylamide for Sand Washing: Sample-to-Order Checks

Select for the water returned to washing and the solids leaving the thickener.

Sample the fines that the circuit actually receives

Record the sand source, wash stage, collection point and visible variation in the fines stream. A diluted side sample can understate the loading on the thickener. Identify changes in clay content or recycled-water use that may make one sampling event unrepresentative.

State whether the objective is reuse-water clarity, recovery, manageable underflow or all three. NPAM is a candidate for testing, not a guaranteed selection for every sand or clay mixture. Compare justified alternatives if initial screening does not meet the target.

Include both ends of the separator

Run matched settling comparisons with controlled preparation and dose units. Record clarified water at a defined observation time alongside settled-bed behavior. A fast interface can coexist with unacceptable fine particles remaining in the overflow.

Consider the receiving wash operation and the downstream solids equipment. A result acceptable in a cylinder may not survive the real transfer or meet the next equipment constraint. Connect the observations with mineral-washing qualification.

Check the reused-water preparation option

If reused water is proposed for polymer make-down, compare it separately with an identified alternative. Keep the same powder code and preparation method in that test. Do not change both preparation water and feed source and attribute the outcome to the polymer.

Record the water measurements that are actually available and identify unknowns. Conductivity can help describe a condition but does not identify every dissolved constituent.

Translate the successful run into an order

Retain the accepted grade code, preparation demand, commercial consumption and qualified feed range. Ask for packaging that suits the dry-feeding and storage arrangement, then confirm the expected quantity and destination.

Use qualified treatment-cost comparison rather than selecting the lowest price per ton across untested powders. Define when another feed sample will be required if the sand source changes.
